Groomer Notes: Wintergreen Pushes 14 New Fan Guns Into the Offseason

NELSON COUNTY, Va. — While chairlifts sit idle and summer tubing crowds thin out, Wintergreen Resort’s mountain-ops crews are treating the calendar like a countdown clock. The resort’s current capital push centers on snowmaking and the electrical backbone that feeds it: fourteen new TechnoAlpin TT10 high-output fan guns, deeper integration of TechnoAlpin’s ATASS control system, and a new CVEC electrical substation under construction to expand capacity for future growth.
The resort’s upgrades page lists additional winter-prep work that does not require fresh powder to matter: replacement of the Patch Lift haul rope, a new conveyor for The Plunge tubing park, and the usual round of lift inspections and preventative maintenance. Wintergreen’s “Building a Better Wintergreen Experience” post from this summer frames the snowmaking package as part of a year-round investment cycle—same mountain, different season, same goal of reliable winter operations.
Mission Affordable season passes remain in Tier 2 through Sept. 7. Wintergreen’s pass page lists adult passes at $579 and junior or senior passes at $519 during that window; Tier 3 pricing begins Sept. 8.
Across the state line in Maryland, Wisp Resort is running its own 2026–27 snowmaking program: twelve permanent TechnoAlpin TL8 stick guns on Little Dipper, a new 700-foot 24-inch pipeline between a snowmaking pond and The Pumphouse, and roughly 800 feet of replaced pipe on Lower Wisp Trail with five new hydrants—enough redeployed portable firepower, Wisp says, to spread capacity elsewhere on the mountain.
