RICHMOND, Va. — Two Mid-Atlantic storylines are running on different calendars this fall, and both matter to drivers leaving Richmond with skis on the roof.
The snowmaking pair. Wintergreen Resort (~111 driving miles from Richmond on MTNinfo’s standing drive chart) and Wisp Resort in Maryland are spending the offseason on complementary infrastructure rather than a shared lift project. Wintergreen’s upgrades page lists fourteen new TechnoAlpin TT10 fan guns, expanded ATASS automation, and a CVEC substation build-out. Wisp’s upgrades page details twelve permanent TechnoAlpin TL8 guns on Little Dipper plus major pipe and pump work tied to Deep Creek Lake. For a Richmond household splitting weekends between Wintergreen and Wisp, the headline is capacity and reliability, not a resort-versus-resort scorecard. The hotel play. Massanutten Resort, about 106–109 driving miles from Richmond on the same chart, is steering a different investment: ShenandoaH2O, a new waterpark hotel connected to the indoor/outdoor waterpark and arcade. Massanutten’s live ShenandoaH2O page schedules a grand opening in early 2027—not the October 2026 date floated in earlier press coverage this desk is skipping. Ski and snowboarding remain part of the broader resort pitch, but the near-term lodging story is splash zones and suite-style rooms, not new snow guns.
