Closed for the Day: Labor Day, and the Mid-Atlantic Still Needs Ice
While the West dusts and Wintergreen sells haunted chairs, Richmond’s ski itch meets a backyard cookout the only way it knows how — bags of ice and a straight fall line.
RICHMOND, Va. — The calendar on the fence says September 6. The banner says Labor Day Cookout. The sun is doing overtime. Somewhere west of the Blue Ridge, resorts are still talking snowmaking guns and pass clocks. Out here, opening day is a rumor with a long drive attached.
So one household improvises: feed the machine, lay a crushed-ice fall line through the grass, and ski it in full kit while the grill works the burgers and the pool floats a beach ball that will never see a gondola. Heat shimmer optional. Commitment is not.
This desk files no snow totals, invents no opening dates, and does not claim the ice will last past the next bag. It only recognizes the Mid-Atlantic condition: when the hills are quiet, some people still need a run — even if the only vertical is the walk back to the cooler.
