Epic vs Ikon vs Indy: How to Pick a Ski Pass From Where You Live
A pass is not a logo. The useful question is which mountains you can actually drive to, and whether those days are unlimited or two-and-done.
Most “Epic vs Ikon” pages count logos. Do not start there. Alterra Mountain Company’s March 5, 2026, 26/27 Ikon release says “76 global destinations.” The live Ikon Pass FAQ table says “Destinations: 77.” Snowshoe Mountain’s own Ikon page says “70+ global destinations.” Those are official wordings. They do not agree.
Epic Pass, on Vail Resorts’ Aug. 18, 2026, newsroom copy, “offers unlimited, unrestricted access to iconic destinations worldwide.” The Epic store was not serving a destination count. This page will not invent one, and it will not say Ikon “lists more names.”
The ski pass map treats unlimited, limited days, and two-day access as different products. Use driving miles. Do not treat a map’s shorter figure as the Saturday drive.
“On the pass” is not enough
Snowshoe and Jackson Hole are both Ikon mountains. They are not the same pass.
Snowshoe Mountain: “unlimited access to Snowshoe Mountain” on snowshoemtn.com’s Ikon page. Jackson Hole’s Ikon page: “we require lift reservations for all Ikon Pass holders. Days may sell out.” And: “Jackson Hole is only included on the full Ikon Pass. Access is NOT included with the Ikon Base Pass or Ikon Session Pass.” Ikon’s 26/27 FAQ lists Jackson Hole at 7 days. Reservations are required, not “often.” Ikon’s FAQ names the 26/27 reservation mountains as Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Deer Valley, and Loon Mountain.
Cranmore and Jiminy Peak are Ikon Bonus Mountains: two days each. Ikon’s FAQ sets bonus blackouts at Dec. 26–30, 2026, Jan. 16–17, 2027, and Feb. 13–14, 2027. Bonus access is not on Ikon Base or Ikon Session.
Telluride Ski Resort’s Epic page: Epic Pass, Epic Adaptive, Epic Merchant, Epic Club, and VR Lifetime Pass holders “will receive 7 unrestricted days at Telluride.” Epic Local, Epic Military, and limited-access Epic Day Pass products “DO NOT afford access to Telluride.” Seven unrestricted days. Not a reservation pitch.
Indy, on indyskipass.com, “gives you two free lift tickets and a third discounted day at each one of our Partner Resorts.” The 26/27 Indy Pass “is currently sold out.”
On the map, solid pins are unlimited. Rings are limited partner days. Diamonds are two-day products.
A worked example: Richmond, Virginia
Set the map to Epic and Ikon, Richmond as home, 300 miles, and 1,000 feet of vertical. If the screen comes back with one mountain — Snowshoe — that is the wrong picture.
Snowshoe is Ikon unlimited, about 202 driving miles from Richmond.
Blue Mountain Resort, PA, also belongs. Blue Mountain’s skiing page: “the state’s highest vertical at 1,082 feet.” Blue Mountain’s Ikon page: “Depending on your Ikon Pass type, you will be able to ski at Blue Mountain Resort 5 or 7 days. For details on your specific pass type, visit www.ikonpass.com.” The drive from Richmond is about 308 to 320 miles. A ~247-mile figure is air, not the Saturday question. It is still an Ikon hill with more than 1,000 feet of vertical, and it is not “one mountain: Snowshoe.”
Epic does not get a sourced driving-mile placement inside that Richmond circle on this page. Vail-owned Pennsylvania hills on Telluride’s Vail-owned list include Liberty Mountain Resort and Whitetail Resort; official driving miles from Richmond for them are not on this page.
Turn Indy on. Wintergreen’s winter page: “Just 1½ hours from Richmond.” Driving distance about 111 miles. Massanutten about 106 to 109 driving miles. Both two Indy days each. Virginia Indy also includes Bryce Resort in Basye, listed on Indy at 500 feet of vertical — eight trails, four lifts.
Farther north on Indy: Blue Knob, about 261 driving miles. Montage Mountain, about 340 driving miles. Montage is not a Saturday drive. Blue Knob is a long day, not a casual one. A 150-mile radius is the more honest Saturday.
Ikon wins if Snowshoe is home base and you will actually use unlimited days at 4,848 feet. Indy wins if you want Virginia weekends at Wintergreen and Massanutten — and a shorter Bryce day. Epic wins if your days are at a Vail-owned hill you can reach, or a Vail week out west — Stowe, Okemo, and Hunter Mountain are on Telluride’s Vail-owned list; Liberty and Whitetail are the Pennsylvania names on that same list — not if you only ski from Richmond and never leave the 200-mile ring.
How to use the map
- Pick the passes you already own or might buy. You can stack them. Many locals keep a home pass and add Indy for road trips.
- Set a home city. Sort the list by distance. Treat the number as a drive. A 300-mile radius is a long day trip; 150 miles is more honest for a Saturday. If a pin looks close and the drive is 300-plus, believe the drive.
- Set a minimum vertical if you do not want 400-foot hills. At 1,000 feet you will hide Bryce (500 feet) and keep Wintergreen (Indy lists 1,003 feet) and Massanutten (Indy lists 1,100 feet).
- Filter access: unlimited, limited days, or two-day.
- Compare two or three mountains from a pin.
Share the view. The URL keeps your passes, city, radius, and vertical.

When each pass usually wins
Epic if your home hill is Vail-owned — Stowe, Okemo, Hunter, Liberty, Whitetail, among the names Telluride lists as Vail-owned — and you want unlimited, unrestricted days there plus a western week. Telluride is the seven-unrestricted-day partner, not unlimited, and not on Epic Local.
Ikon if you want Snowshoe unlimited, or Stratton and Sugarbush, or a no-blackout destination pass, and you accept that Jackson Hole is 7 days on Ikon’s 26/27 FAQ, with reservations required, and that Blue Mountain, PA, is 5 or 7 days depending on the Ikon product. Alterra says 76 destinations. Ikon’s FAQ says 77.
Indy if you live near independents. In Virginia that is Wintergreen, Massanutten, and Bryce. Two free days each and a third discounted day. The 26/27 pass is sold out as of this filing.
Mountain Collective and Snow Pass are on the map as separate products. Confirm current access on those vendors before you buy. Day counts and prices for those two stay off this page.

What we left off the map
The catalog is North America alpine resorts on these five passes. Cross-country-only areas are out. Japan, the Alps, and Australia are out of the Saturday-from-Richmond question, even when Ikon’s global list includes them.
Start with the passes you are considering, a home city, and a vertical floor. Use driving miles. If the unlimited list is empty inside a distance you will actually drive, you do not have a destination-pass problem — you have an Indy or local-pass problem.
