Wintergreen Is Installing 14 New Fan Guns and a New Substation. It Still Has Not Named Opening Day.

As of Oct. 11, 2026, Wintergreen Resort has not posted a 2026-27 opening day. Fourteen TechnoAlpin TT10 fan guns, expanded ATASS, and a CVEC substation are on the offseason list.

NELSON COUNTY, Va.: When does Wintergreen open for the 2026-27 ski season? As of Sunday evening, Oct. 11, 2026, the resort still has not named a Wintergreen opening day.

The Liftline Times checked Wintergreen’s upgrades and improvements page, the winter hub, and the mountain report on Sunday evening. None of those pages lists a 2026-27 opening date or a snowmaking-start day. The mountain report showed 0 of 27 trails open and every lift closed, which is expected in mid-October. What is missing is the calendar call Richmond-drive skiers are waiting for.

That silence is the news. The hardware story is why it matters.

Wintergreen snowmaking 2026: the package still on the board

We first tracked this offseason push in Groomer Notes on Aug. 31. Six weeks later, Wintergreen’s official upgrades page still lists the same winter-operations package:

  • Installation of 14 new TechnoAlpin TT10 high-output fan guns
  • Expanded integration of TechnoAlpin’s ATASS control system
  • Modernization of the snowmaking communications network
  • A new CVEC electrical substation under construction, aimed at more electrical capacity for future growth
  • Replacement of the Patch Lift haul rope
  • A new conveyor system for The Plunge tubing park
  • Comprehensive lift inspections and preventative maintenance

The resort has not published a public checklist that splits those items into finished versus still in progress, beyond the CVEC substation, which it continues to describe as under construction. Photos on the upgrades page show mountain-ops crews setting fan guns on the hill, so the snowmaking build is visibly under way even if Wintergreen has not declared any line item complete.

The same package appears in Wintergreen’s July 30, 2026 “Building a Better Wintergreen Experience” post and in an Aug. 27, 2026 “Get Ready for Winter” note. The wording has not changed into an opening-day announcement.

What 14 fan guns and a substation can and cannot promise

More guns and more power help when the mercury finally drops. They do not invent cold nights. Mid-Atlantic snowmaking lives and dies on short cold windows, and fewer snowmaking hours at Mid-Atlantic resorts at most sites since the mid-2000s make each cold night count more. Wintergreen’s own upgrades copy frames the work as efficiency, monitoring, reliability, and capacity for future growth, not as a named early open.

Last winter’s completed phase, which Wintergreen still lists on the same page, added 10 TT10s and redesigned snowmaking on Upper Dobie and Central Mountain. The resort described that phase as part of a longer modernization. The 2026-27 round is the next chapter of that build, not a substitute for an opening date.

Pass shoppers already have their own clock in the Oct. 5 Ticket Window lead: Mission Affordable steps from Tier 3 to Tier 4 on Tuesday, Oct. 13. If a pass is more mountain than you need, Wintergreen’s Mission Affordable 4-Pack goes on sale online Wednesday, Oct. 14, at $279 for four 8-hour lift tickets through Dec. 1, then $319 from Dec. 2 to Dec. 17.

Wintergreen resort opening day: what we will watch next

Until Wintergreen posts a date, treat third-party calendars as guesses. The Liftline Times will update this page when the resort names a Wintergreen opening day 2026-27 on an official channel.

Will 14 new fan guns and a new substation actually move Wintergreen’s early-season open earlier, or is this mostly about midwinter reliability when the cold windows are short?
